Brisbane Lions overcame a tough Essendon challenge to secure a gritty win at the Gabba in Round 12. Despite a shaky third quarter, the Lions finished stronger, riding momentum and crowd energy to claim the four points in a tightly contested encounter.
Both sides traded blows early, with Zach Merrett and Jye Caldwell giving the Bombers midfield the early edge. Brisbane responded through Lachie Neale and a dominant showing by Oscar McInerney in the ruck, setting up repeated forward entries.
Joe Daniher kicked three goals against his former side, while Charlie Cameron added two of his own and provided pressure inside 50. The Lions were wasteful at times, missing gettable chances, which allowed Essendon to stay in the game.
Late in the final term, the Bombers surged back into contention thanks to Jake Stringer’s contested work and a couple of quick goals from Kyle Langford. But Brisbane’s defensive line held firm, with Harris Andrews leading from the back.
The final siren was met with relief as Brisbane claimed the victory by less than two goals, snapping Essendon’s winning streak and keeping their own season on track.
