Hawthorn (Hawks) held on in a gritty contest at UTAS Stadium to defeat Adelaide (Crows) by three points, 6.11 (47) to 5.14 (44). In a match dominated by defence and inaccuracy, the Hawks clawed their way back with two goals late in the final term to claim the lead.
The Crows started strongly, generating more inside 50s and dominating field position in the opening half. However, repeated missed opportunities kept the door open. They ended the night with a wasteful 5.14, failing to convert key chances throughout the match.
Connor Macdonald was the difference-maker, snapping a crucial goal late in the fourth quarter to put the Hawks in front. Jarman Impey was outstanding in defence, intercepting several Crows entries and rebounding with efficiency.
The win marks another hard-fought result for Sam Mitchell’s young side, while Adelaide will be left to rue poor execution in front of goal.
